I’m going to be a Big Sister soon! Well, that’s not entirely true, as I’ve been ‘big sister’ to Noelina, Ephra and Andrew for the last three decades.
I’m in the process, however, of being matched with a “Little Sister” through the nation’s oldest youth mentorship program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBS), headquartered in Philadelphia.
As I was walking the showroom floor at the PPAI Expo two weeks ago, I received a call from a BBBS representative informing me that she’d found a potential match for me. I paused and listened closely to the rundown of the young lady she’d had in mind. For the remainder of my time in Las Vegas, I gave much thought to the conversation, but had to admit I didn’t think it would be the right fit. Upon my return home, I e-mailed BBBS and informed them of my decision.
Well, last night, I received yet another call from the BBBS representative with a rundown of another young lady. Midway through the conversation, I was certain this would be my Little Sister! For starters, she enjoys writing! Perhaps her childhood hobby will one day land her a job at the esteemed Promo Marketing magazine; perhaps it will give her the courage to purchase land and establish her own magazine! The next step for me is to have a face-to-face meeting with the young lady. I can’t wait! I’ll keep you posted!
What does this have to do with promotional products? Nothing in particular, other than the necessity of industry professionals understanding the importance of mentoring and/or giving back to today’s youth. As I grow older, I find myself becoming more passionate about this ideal. I was pleased to learn PPAI’s Kids in Need Foundation has a similar passion. The charitable organization provides free school supplies nationally to needy children and under-funded teachers. Membership is open to all industry professionals.
If joining organizations like BBBS (www.bbbs.org) and Kids in Need Foundation (www.kidsinneed.net) is not your thing, then find your thing and get involved in the life of some young person who needs it. If you are involved, stay involved and watch your time and effort pay off big!
‘Til we chat again…
